I Mandorli is one of Italy's best kept secrets. Located on a hill in a small village where the Tuscan coast meets the sea, you arrive with a true sense that you've discovered a rare gem. No one is looking for this place, not many have found it, but it's what everyone should be searching for.
As you enter the vineyard you are hit with the natural smell of the sea and mountains, relishing the incredible view and enjoying the peaceful sound of exclusivity. With Mandorla (almond) trees filling the landscape of the area, it's no surprise that they have taken inspiration from this for the name of their farm. It is a tranquil environment. Full of sincerity and the warmth of their hospitality.
I was fortunate enough to meet the owners daughter, Maddalena Pasquetti, in London. Having originally worked as a primary school teacher, Maddalena left the fast-paced city life behind to fulfil her passion of winemaking with her father Massimo. She now thrives within a culture that embraces quality of life, treating me to delicious handmade Tortelli di patate al ragu’ and exceptional wine.
Sticking to a process that many have left behind, their wines are unconventional, keeping everything 100% natural with no additives. They are an expression of the earth, of the territory within which they are made, and a link between us and the land. This representation is carried through to their label, with 7 colourful lines reflecting the sun, sky, leaves, sea, earth and grapes where the wine was made.
Whilst it is a small farm, producing around 25,000 bottles a year, it does everything to a supreme level. This is real Italian quality. A chance to experience the very best the Tuscan coast has to offer.
